About the Program

Ujiachilie supports people with disabilities in different ways and other aspects of their lives. Its activity begins with screening, making a diagnosis, offering a clear management plan for each person, and then enrolling them for each care category they need. All persons enrolled come from disadvantaged families and don’t have access to therapy clinics and medical care. If disabled people get proper comprehensive therapy, it reduces the burden of disability to a great extent. To ensure better outcomes of our efforts, we run a comprehensive therapy unit at St Joseph Health Centre, catering to the multiple therapy needs of people with disabilities. So far, the population of the project is 50 children with physical and mental disabilities from economically disadvantaged families. We hope to extend it in the next months, with the support of our donors.

Task Activities

Caregiver Education: The training consists of group sessions and some home visits, focusing on training the caregiver on how to use daily play and home activities and routines as opportunities for enhanced interaction and participation, development, and learning. The sessions specifically address communication, engagement daily living skills, challenging behavior, and caregiver coping strategies.
Medical Management: People with disabilities generally require the same general health care services needed by every child, but often at increased frequency and intensity, and they also require a variety of specialized services that children without disabilities do not generally need. To ensure optimal health outcomes, disabled people are entitled to regular primary health care services.
Physiotherapy: Our physiotherapists evaluate, identify, analyze, and treat people with disabilities’ growth and movement issues. Our physiotherapy program is specific to a person’s needs, age, and abilities.
Occupational Therapy: Occupational therapy focuses on helping people with disabilities to perform age-appropriate tasks or activities of daily living as safely and efficiently as possible.
Language, Speech, and Communication Therapy: Our Speech and Language Therapists provide assessment and treatment for children in the areas of Augmentative and Alternative Communication, Dysphagia, Cognitive and Linguistic Development, Speech Articulation, Social Skills, Voice, and Fluency/Stuttering.
Orthotic Support: Customized orthotic appliances are prescribed to maintain the corrections derived from the therapy program. Commonly used orthotic appliances and assistive devices are prescribed.
